Phillies Skid Reaches Five With Loss to Houston

With Roy Oswalt breezing through the Phillies lineup, the Astros shutout the Phillies 5-0 Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies have now lost five straight and have fallen one game under the .500 mark. Phillies' hitters managed just five hits off Oswalt and two Astros' relievers.

If not for one bad inning, the outcome might have been different. Then again, with the Phillies bats completely silent, the outcome might not have been any different.

Randy Wolf (5-8) pitched seven innings, six of them very impressively, but gave up five runs in the fourth inning. The big blow was a bases loaded double by backup catcher Raul Chavez. Back-to-back doubles by Craig Biggio and Carlos Beltran gave the Astros a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jeff Kent doubled to drive in another run ahead of Chavez' hit. In his other six innings, Wolf allowed just two hits and no walks.

Roy Oswalt (13-8) kept the Phillies completely dazed and confused. Over 7 2/3 innings, Oswalt gave up five hits and two walks. He exited in favor of reliever Mike Gallo in the eighth. Dan Micelli threw a perfect ninth inning to put away the Phillies.

Placido Polanco led the Phillies with two hits, but again, stranded runners were an issue. The Phillies stranded 11 runners on base. On the bright side, David Bell and Jim Thome returned to the Phillies lineup. Bell finished the night 1-3, while Thome went 0-3.

The series continues Wednesday night with future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens (12-4, 2.76) making the first start of his career against the Phillies. Cory Lidle (7-11, 5.26) makes the second start of his Phillies career.
