Padilla Helps Phillies To 6-1 Win Over Brewers

Vicente Padilla tossed seven scoreless innings and David Bell and Bobby Abreu each drove in a pair of runs as the Phillies erupted for six runs in the fifth en route to a 6-1 triumph over the Brewers. The win snapped a seven-game home losing streak for the Phillies and was the fourth straight win for the Phillies over Milwaukee.

Entering the game, the Phillies had won just three of their previous 13 games - all against Milwaukee. They continued their winning ways vs. the Brewers in this one, scoring six times with two outs in the fifth against Victor Santos.

With one on, Santos walked Padilla and Jimmy Rollins to load the bases for Jason Michaels, who delivered an RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

"Jimmy Rollins basically won the game tonight, busting his rear end on that ball that Michaels hit up the middle," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "Those are the kind of things that go unnoticed, but Jimmy has been having a great year for us. He has played unbelievable baseball for us all year."

Rollins slid headfirst into second base, beating the throw from Milwaukee second baseman Trent Durrington, who prevented Michaels' single from going into center field.

"A lot of times, you go the normal way and you are out by a half-step," Rollins said. "So that time, I went ahead and took the fastest way that I thought I would get there, and that was headfirst."

Abreu followed with a two-run base hit and, after Jim Thome was walked intentionally, Bell stroked a two-run single, giving Philadelphia a 5-0 bulge.

Bell extended his hitting streak to 10 games and is hitting .414 (17-for-41) over that span.

Jeff Bennett relieved Santos and hit Placido Polanco with a pitch before Mike Lieberthal, who singled earlier in the inning, drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the sixth run.

The outburst was more than enough support for Padilla (5-6), who allowed five hits and a walk while striking out five. The righthander, who missed more than two months with elbow tendinitis, recorded his first win since May 23 against San Diego.

Santos (10-9) lost for the sixth time in seven decisions, surrendering six runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings with four walks and three strikeouts. Santos retired the first 10 batters of the game and limited Philadelphia to one hit through four innings.

Geoff Jenkins homered for Milwaukee, which has dropped nine in a row.
