Lidle Looks Awesome in Phillies 10-0 Win

The Phillies gave up three young prospects to get Cory Lidle from Cincinnati and he hadn't shown any value in return in his first three starts for the Phillies. Turns out number four was the charm. Lidle threw a complete game, four-hit shutout Sunday and also chipped in with a homerun of his own as the Phillies beat Milwaukee 10-0 and swept the season series from the Brewers.

Cory Lidle (8-12) has a reputation for eating innings and he did just that and more Sunday. Lidle allowed just four hits and one walk, but did hit three hitters with pitches. Lidle also struck out nine hitters in recording his fourth complete game of the season, tying him for second in the National League.

Lidle got a quick 1-0 lead when Jimmy Rollins led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to right and scored when Jason Michaels followed with an RBI single. Brewers starter Wes Obermueller (4-7) retired the Phillies without any further damage in the first and put them down in order in the second. The Phillies would get another run in the third when Lidle led off the inning with his first major league homerun that cleared the left field fence and landed about eight rows deep in the seats.

Placido Polanco, who gave the Phillies a win Saturday night with a walk-off homerun, doubled with one out in the fourth and then scored on an RBI single from Mike Lieberthal that gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead.

Obermueller and Lidle were working their way through the game until the Phillies offense went back to work in the bottom of the sixth. Polanco led off the inning with a double and Obermueller exited in favor of Dave Burba. Lieberthal flew out, but Marlon Byrd singled to score Polanco and the Phillies went up 4-0. Lidle sacrificed Byrd to second and Rollins doubled to score the final run of the inning, before Burba struck out Michaels to end the inning.

The Phillies put runners on first and second with one out in the seventh when Polanco doubled to score Bobby Abreu who had reached on an infield single. Lieberthal walked to load the bases and Byrd stepped up and delivered the first grand slam of the season by a Phillie and suddenly the Phillies lead had expanded to 10-0.

The Phillies will interupt their homestand for a makeup game against the White Sox in Chicago on Monday. Brett Myers (7-9, 5.35) will start against Mark Buehrle (11-8, 4.02). When the Phillies return from Chicago, the Atlanta Braves will be waiting in Philadelphia for a two-game series with the Phillies.
