Michaels Leads Phillies to a 9-5 Win in New York

Jason Michaels paced the Phillies with four hits and four RBI as they beat the Mets 9-5 to win the opening game of a three-game set in New York. Michaels set a career high for hits in a game and capped his night with a two-run homerun in the seventh inning as the Phillies went ahead to stay.

Jason Michaels' eighth homerun of the season snapped a 5-5 tie as the Phillies took the lead for good and went on to beat the Mets 9-5 Friday night at Shea Stadium. The two-run shot was part of a career night for Michaels as he picked up four hits and drove in four runs to lead the Phillies attack.

Michaels led off the second with a single and went to second when Mike Lieberthal singled with one out. After starter Brett Myers bunted both runners over, Jimmy Rollins dropped a broken bat single into left field to score two runs and give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Michaels added RBI singles in the third and fifth innings before hitting his homerun in the seventh.

Myers got himself in trouble by giving up homerun balls. David Wright and Richard Hidalgo went back-to-back in the second inning as the Mets stormed back to take a 3-2 lead. Jeff Keppinger homered off Myers in the third as the Mets went up 5-4. Keppinger now has three homeruns in his short stint with New York.

Placido Polanco added an insurance run with a solo homerun in the eighth inning. Bobby Abreu later doubled and scored on David Bell's single as the Phillies pushed their lead to 9-5. Michaels came to the plate with Bell on second and two outs, but grounded to second to end the inning without any further damage.

With Myers exiting after just four innings, the Phillies bullpen again did their job. Five relievers each pitched an inning, allowing just three hits and no walks to keep the Mets scoreless as the Phillies offense put some more runs on the board. Todd Jones (10-5) pitched a perfect sixth inning to get the win in relief. Roberto Hernandez, Felix Rodriguez, Tim Worrell and Billy Wagner each pitched an inning of shutout relief.

Ricky Bottalico (3-2) gave up Michaels' homerun and took the loss for the Mets.

The series continues Saturday afternoon when Eric Milton (13-4, 4.69) goes against Steve Trachsel (10-13, 4.13).
