Reds Win 7-6, Ruin Impressive Phillies Comeback

Cory Lidle pitched for the Reds on opening day this season and made his first start against the Reds Tuesday night. Let's just say that opening day went better. Lidle gave up five first inning runs and the Reds overcame a Phillies rally to pick up their second straight win over the Phils, beating them 7-6.

The Phillies seemingly gave up on shortstop Anderson Machado and sent him to Cincinnati in a deal for Todd Jones earlier this season. Turns out that Machado delivered a big first inning triple off former Reds starter Cory Lidle that helped seal a five-run inning as the Reds jumped on Lidle.

Lidle started strong, getting the first two hitters before he fell apart completely. While he was throwing strikes to get the first two outs of the inning, he walked the bases loaded after that. Wily Mo Pena delivered a two-run single and Jason LaRue followed with a double that gave the Reds a quick 3-0 lead. Machado followed with his bases clearing triple and suddenly, the Phillies were down 5-0. Lidle settled down and struck out pitcher Jose Acevedo to end the inning and then pitched four more innings without allowing a run.

Jimmy Rollins, who led off the game with a bunt single, picked up his second hit of the night with one out in the third and then scored on Bobby Abreu's RBI double that cut the lead to 5-1. Abreu would later deliver a three-run homerun in the fifth as the Phillies put four runs on the board to tie the game at 5-5 and knock Acevedo out of the game.

In addition to Abreu's homerun, the Phillies got a solo homerun from David Bell in the fifth to cap the comeback and tie the score at 5-5. The inning started when Rollins reached on an error by first baseman Sean Casey.

Machado delivered a one-out single in the sixth and then stole second base off reliever Ryan Madson. Madson then lost his control and walked Jacob Cruz before uncorking a wild pitch that put runners at second and third with one out. It looked like Madson would pull the plug on the Reds rally when Ryan Freel grounded to short and Machado was thrown out at the plate, but Felipe Lopez tripled to drive in two runs and the Reds erased the Phillies comeback and took a 7-5 lead.

Jim Thome launched his 41st homerun of the season to center field in the seventh as the Phillies cut the game to 7-6, but couldn't put any more runs on the board after that.

Danny Graves came on and gave up a hit in the ninth, but held on to record his 40th save of the year and make a winner out of reliever Ryan Wagner (3-1). Madson (9-3) took the loss.

The series wraps up with an afternoon game Wednesday. The Phillies then take Thursday off before returning home for a weekend series with Montreal.
