Phillies Run Into a Sledge-Hammer in 6-5 Loss

In the first two games of their series with the Expos, the Phillies have already become pretty sick of Terrmel Sledge. In two games, Sledge has driven in seven runs against the Phillies, including leading the Expos big Friday night comeback. The Expos have won both of the first two games as the Phillies playoff hopes move closer to being officially over.

Tony Batista came up a homerun short of hitting for the cycle against the Phillies Saturday night as he drove in the Expos' first and last runs of the game. In between, Terrmel Sledge drove in three runs for Montreal to lead the Expos to a 6-5 win over the Phillies.

Brett Myers came on in relief in the top of the 14th inning and got the first two outs of the inning. Endy Chavez quickly ruined the inning with a base hit and a stolen base. Batista followed with an RBI single, giving the Expos a 6-5 lead. Francisco Beltran came on to put away the Phillies in the bottom of the inning to record his first save of the year.

Batista doubled to drive in a run and then scored on an RBI single from Juan Rivera as the Expos jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Batista also tripled in the third and scored when Sledge followed with his 14th homerun of the season off starter Vicente Padilla. Batista singled in the fifth, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. The hit did move Chavez, who singled, to third where he was able to score on a sacrifice fly from Sledge. Batista and Sledge combined to drive in five of Montreal's six runs.

The Phillies trailed 4-0 in the fourth when Chase Utley's fielder's choice ground ball and Jason Michael's RBI single drove in runs to make it a 4-2 game.

Expos starter Sun Woo-Kim was knocked out of the game in the fifth inning. A.J. Hinch led off the inning with a base hit and pinch-hitter Marlon Byrd followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Jimmy Rollins' fielder's choice ground ball drove in Hinch and Placido Polanco followed with a base hit to make the score 5-4 in favor of Montreal. Bobby Abreu singled with two outs and the Expos went to reliever Joe Horgan, who got David Bell to ground out to end the inning.

The highlight of the night for the Phillies was probably the bottom of the seventh when Ryan Howard pinch-hit for reliever Todd Jones. Howard launched a shot through a strong wind blowing in from center field and put it into the first row of seats in right field. The shot tied the game 5-5 and was Howard's second major league homerun. As a pinch-hitter, Howard is now 4-7 (.571) with two homeruns and a double.

The Phillies used eight relievers to cover nine innings, with just Geoff Geary pitching more than one inning. The bullpen allowed one earned run on four hits and six walks. Myers (9-10) took the loss.

Chad Cordero (6-3) threw a career-high three innings and recorded the win for Montreal.

The series ends Sunday with Scott Downs going against Kevin Millwood, who is making his first start since coming off the disabled list. Millwood will be on a pitch count and it's likely that Gavin Floyd will come on in relief after Millwood throws two or three innings.
