Everybody Hits as Phillies Beat Montreal 7-2

Kevin Millwood and Gavin Floyd worked as tag-team starters for the Phillies and held the Expos down until the bullpen came in and did their job. Relievers other than Floyd, gave the Phillies four shutout innings while five Phillies had multi-hit games to pace the Phils to a 7-2 win over Montreal, salvaging one game of the series.

The Phillies offense picked up Kevin Millwood in his return to the mound.

Placido Polanco and Jimmy Rollins had three hits apiece and Mike Lieberthal homered as the Phillies cruised to a 7-2 win over the Montreal Expos.

Making his first start since August 5 after a bout with elbow tendinitis, Millwood gave up a run and three hits in two innings, striking out three.

A 14-game winner in 2003, Millwood yielded to Gavin Floyd (2-0), who allowed one run in three innings to grab his first win as a reliever. Three more pitchers combined on four scoreless innings while striking out five as the Phillies salvaged the finale of a three-game set.

Philadelphia chipped away with a run in the second and another in the third before breaking out in the fourth. With one out, Rollins hit a bases-loaded single to score one run and Polanco followed with a two-run base hit that made it 5-2.

The Phillies added two more in the sixth when Rollins ripped his 40th double and came in on Bobby Abreu's 40th two-base hit. David Bell added a run-scoring single for a 7-2 lead. Rollins and Abreu became the first Philadelphia teammates to have at least 40 doubles in the same season since 1932, when four players accomplished the feat.

Lieberthal homered in the second to knot the score, 1-1 - his second homerun in three career at-bats vs. Montreal starter Scott Downs (3-6).

Downs gave up five runs and eight hits in four innings. He is 0-2 with a 17.05 ERA in two starts vs. the Phillies this season.

The Expos had numerous opportunities to score early, but managed only single tallies in the first and fourth innings. They left the bases loaded in the first, fourth and fifth.

A sellout crowd of 42,603 helped push the Phillies over the three million mark in attendance for the second time in franchise history. They also drew that many fans during their last pennant-winning season in 1993.

The Phillies are off on Monday before they open a three-game series in Miami against the Marlins. Cory Lidle (9-12, 5.17) is slated to pitch the series opener against Dontrelle Willis (10-9, 3.86).
