Finally! Success on a Florida Fishing Trip

Cory Lidle made it through five perfect innings before an error ruined his bid for perfection. Then, after 6 1/3 innings, an infield single ended his bid for a no-hitter. Before the seventh inning was over, Lidle would exit, but the bullpen put out the fire and the Phillies held on for a 4-2 win over the Marlins.

After a long ride on the backs of the Phillies, the monkey is finally in its cage. A 14 game losing skid in Miami came to an end for the Phillies with a 4-2 win over the Marlins Tuesday night.

Cory Lidle came out firing and made it through five innings perfectly. A ground ball to third baseman David Bell bounced off the heel of Bell's glove for an error to start the sixth inning, but Lidle worked out of it.

An inning later, Luis Castillo recorded his 43rd infield single of the season with one out, ending Lidle's bid for a no-hitter. "I was thinking about the no-hitter. I know I shouldn't have, but I was," admitted Lidle after the game.

Castillo's single was followed by two more infield singles as the Marlins loaded the bases with two outs. Lidle then hit Damion Easley with a pitch and walked Juan Encarnacion to force across two runs for the Marlins. Ryan Madson came on to relieve Lidle and struck out pinch-hitter Mike Lowell to end the inning. Madson also threw a perfect eighth inning for the Phillies.

The Phillies put four runs on the board in the top of the first inning off Marlins' starter Dontrelle Willis (10-10). Jimmy Rollins singled to start the game and Placido Polanco doubled to put runners on second and third. Willis walked Jim Thome with one out to load the bases and then walked Bell and Paul LoDuca was charged with a passed ball, pushing two runs across the plate and leaving runners on second and third. Jason Michaels grounded out, but Thome scored on the play and Mike Lieberthal would later single to drive in the fourth run of the inning for the Phillies. Lidle - appearing in the batter's box before he appeared on the mound - struck out to end the inning.

After the first inning, Willis settled down to pitch seven more innings, giving up just three hits and one walk after the Phillies took their 4-0 lead.

Billy Wagner came on to close out the game, throwing a perfect ninth inning to record his 18th save of the season.

After the game, Phillies' manager Larry Bowa was in the mood to celebrate. "I have a couple of bottles of wine around here somewhere," said Bowa. The win puts another nail in the coffin of the Marlins' post-season hopes.

The series continues Wednesday night with Eric Milton (13-4, 4.81) going against rookie Logan Kensing (0-2, 11.57).
