Phillies Battle Back For 4-3 Win in Montreal

Insurance is a good thing. The Phillies added a run to go ahead and then tacked on an insurance run in the tenth inning to beat Montreal 4-3. The insurance helped protect the Phillies from a Tony Batista solo homerun that nearly brought the Expos back in the bottom of the tenth.

If you ask the Phillies, the Expos certainly aren't going quietly.

Shock and Awe: Mets Stun Cubs - Craig Brazell's first major league homerun beats Chicago.
Mike Lieberthal and Ryan Howard each drove in a tenth inning run Saturday night as the Phillies beat Montreal 4-3 in ten innings. Lieberthal, who has been hot lately, added two hits in the game and is now hitting .274 on the season.

Starter Kevin Millwood got into early trouble, giving up a run in the first inning. The Expos used a single and two stolen bases from Endy Chavez in the first inning to help themselves start off with a 1-0 lead. Millwood left the game after the second inning because of a groin injury. It's unlikely that he'll be able to make his last start of the season, which would have likely come on Thursday in Philadelphia. It also kept Millwood from upping his 10-0 lifetime record against the Expos.

Gavin Floyd came on to relieve Millwood and threw four strong innings. The Expos used a walk, a hit batter and an RBI single in the third to pick up a run off Floyd, who allowed one hit and two walks over four innings of work.

The Phillies finally dented Expos' starter Scott Downs in the eighth inning. Up until then, Downs had limited the Phillies to just two hits over the first seven innings and hadn't walked a batter. Jason Michaels and Marlon Byrd picked up eighth inning singles to knock Downs out of the game. Luis Ayala came on and allowed a sacrifice fly to Jimmy Rollins as the Phillies made it a 2-1 game.

Closer Chad Cordero came on to pitch the ninth and gave up singles to David Bell and Mike Lieberthal before he hit Howard with a pitch to load the bases. Michaels then delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.

While the Expos bullpen struggled, the Phillies pen was strong. Including Floyd, the bullpen pitched eight innings, allowing two hits, two walks and two earned runs. Tim Worrell (5-6) got the win in relief, pitching a perfect ninth inning. Billy Wagner recorded his 19th save of the season, despite giving up a tenth inning solo homerun to Tony Batista.

The Phillies attacked the Expos bullpen again in the tenth. Placido Polanco and Lou Collier picked up one-out singles and Lieberthal delivered an RBI single to give the Phillies the lead. Howard then doubled to score Collier as the Phillies took a 4-2 edge. Joey Eischen (0-1) took the loss for Montreal.

The win means that the slim playoff hopes of the Phillies remain alive. They are seven games behind Chicago in the NL Wild Card race with eight games to play.

Sunday may be the Phillies final game in Montreal, depending on the fate of the Expos. Cory Lidle (10-12, 5.09) starts for the Phillies against Livan Hernandez (11-14, 3.48) for Montreal.
