Phils Edge Expos in Final Road Game of the Season

The Phillies had nail biters in what will likely be their last two games in Montreal. After a one-run win in ten innings Saturday night, the Phillies beat Montreal 2-1 Sunday afternoon. Cory Lidle and Livan Hernandez matched up in an old fashioned pitcher's duel.

The fifth inning was the only inning that either the Phillies or Expos were able to score Sunday.

The Phillies got two runs off Livan Hernandez (11-15) in the top of the fifth, thanks in part to an error on Hernandez. After Chase Utley's single, Placido Polanco bunted back to the mound and Hernandez threw wildly to first, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Bobby Abreu then doubled to plate two runs as the Phillies took a 2-0 lead. Hernandez quickly recovered and didn't allow any more damage in the inning.

Hernandez finished the day pitching eight innings, giving up ten hits and three walks. He also tied his season high in strikeouts with nine and now has a total of 248 innings pitched this season to expand his league lead in that category.

The Expos damage came in the bottom of the inning. Terrmel Sledge led off with a single and went to second on a ground ball off the bat of Juan Rivera. Brian Schneider then delivered an RBI single and cut the Phillies lead to 2-1. Cory Lidle (11-12) got out of the inning without any further damage and gave up just a hit and a walk over the next 1 1/3 innings. Lidle finished the day throwing 7 1/3 innings, giving up just four hits and two walks.

Lidle gave up a one-out single in the eighth and was replaced by Rheal Cormier, who came on to face pinch-hitter Ryan Church. Cormier got Church to hit into an inning ending double-play on the first and only pitch that he threw in the inning.

Billy Wagner came on and recorded his 20th save of the year with a perfect bottom of the ninth. To end the game, Wagner got Tony Batista, who had homered off Wagner Saturday night, to ground out to third.

The Phillies finished with a 5-1 on their final road trip of the season and return to Citizens Bank Park for a three-game series with Pittsburgh. Eric Milton (14-4, 4.69) will start the series opener against Oliver Perez (10-10, 3.14) for the Pirates. After Pittsburgh's visit, the Phillies will finish the season with a four-game series against the Florida Marlins.
