Pirates Invade Philadelphia for 6-1 Win

Oliver Perez capitalized on some rare run support. Perez gave up one run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings and moved into third place on the team's single-season strikeout list as the Pirates posted a 6-1 win over the Phillies. The loss put the Phillies one game away from elimination in the National League wild card race.

Oliver Perez (11-10) and Eric Milton (14-5) were battling through the early innings until the Pirates struck first in the fourth inning.

It all started well, as Milton put away the first two hitters of the inning, including striking out Rookie of the Year candidate Jason Bay. From there, Craig Wilson worked a walk and Ty Wigginton notched his 16th homerun of the season, putting Pittsburgh up 2-0.

Ironically, Milton got the exact same two hitters out to start the sixth inning, but would have been better off walking Wilson again. Instead, Wilson doubled. The Phillies didn't take their chances with Wigginton and issued an intentional walk, but that plan backfired when Tike Redman doubled to drive in both runners and push the Pirates up to a 4-0 lead. Milton finished the inning, but was then lifted.

The Pirates had been shutout in four of Perez' starts this season and had scored a total of 17 runs in his 10 losses coming into Monday night's game.

While the Pirates were doing damage with two outs, the Phillies started to put something together with their first hitter in the bottom of the sixth. Marlon Byrd and Placido Polanco both drew walks to put runners on first and second with nobody out. David Bell then singled to drive in Byrd with the Phillies lone run of the game. From there though, Perez rebounded to get Mike Lieberthal, Jason Michaels and Pat Burrell to work out of the jam.

Roberto Hernandez and Felix Rodriguez each threw a perfect inning in relief for the Phillies and the score stayed 4-1 until the top of the ninth.

Todd Jones came on and hit two batters and gave up a single as the Pirates loaded the bases with just one out. Jason Kendall hit into a fielder's choice as the Phillies cut down a run at the plate. Jack Wilson then followed with a two-run single, keeping Jones and the Phillies from getting out of the inning without any damage.

The Pirates got 2 1/3 perfect innings from their bullpen.

Jim Thome missed his third straight game with lingering effects from a bruised chest. Tomas Perez started at first and went 0-4. The series continues Tuesday night when Vicente Padilla (6-7, 4.40) goes against Ian Snell (0-0, 2.57) for the Pirates.
