Let's Win Two; Phillies Sweep Pirates

In the first ever twi-night double-header played at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies seemed to like the idea. The offense was sparking in both games, while the pitching was strong enough to make it a good night. By winning the first game of the night, the Phillies guaranteed that they would finish over the .500 mark for the season.

Game One
Todd Pratt launched his second homerun of the season and it came in a perfect situation. Pratt's three-run homerun was the key hit in a Phillies rally that brought them back from a 3-0 deficit.

The Phillies had eight straight hitters reach base off Pirates' starter Ian Snell (0-1) to start the second inning. Snell, who pitched primarily at AA this season, was making his first major league start.

Pat Burrell singled in a run ahead of Pratt's homerun and Placido Polanco singled home Vicente Padilla, who had walked. The Phillies put five runs on the board in the inning to take a 5-3 lead.

Ty Wigginton hit his 17th homerun of the season off Padilla (7-7) in the top of the second inning to put Pittsburgh on top. Padilla finished his night after pitching five innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits and no walks. Padilla exited early because of the chance that he may come back on three days rest to pitch Sunday's season finale against Florida. The Pirates final run of the game came on a sacrifice fly by Jack Wilson in the fifth inning.

The Phillies got some insurance runs in the sixth inning. Jimmy Rollins tripled to drive in two runs and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly as the Phillies took an 8-4 lead.

Three Phillies relievers pitched four shutout innings to preserve their lead. Former Phillies' farmhand Frank Brooks pitched the bottom of the eighth for Pittsburgh, allowing just a walk in the inning.

Game Two
It looked like Brett Myers (10-11) was due to struggle in his final start of the season. Myers had made it through the first two innings and put down the first two hitters in the third inning before the real trouble started. After an infield single and a walk, Rookie of the Year candidate Jason Bay shot hit 26th homerun of the season to give Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead, much like they had done in the opener.

Placido Polanco picked up an infield single with the bases loaded in the fifth to drive in a run for the Phillies, cutting the Pirates lead to 3-1.

The Phillies' comeback came full circle in the seventh when they put six runs on the board. Three straight one-out hits pushed one run across and an error by Jack Wilson allowed the tying run to score. Bobby Abreu stole his 40th base of the season and after Jason Michaels walked, Chase Utley doubled to drive in two runs. Mike Lieberthal continued to swing a hot bat and followed with a two-run double of his own as the Phillies took a 7-3 lead.

Myers settled in after a shaky start and left after pitching seven innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits and three walks. Myers finishes the season with a 5.53 ERA.

Lou Collier walked, stole a base and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Phillies their eighth run of the game in the eighth inning.

Ryan Vogelsong started and pitched five innings, allowing one earned run for Pittsburgh. Salomon Torres (7-7), who came on in relief of Mike Gonzalez to start the seventh inning, gave up five hits and one walk and was charged with six runs - only one earned - in 2/3 of an inning and suffered the loss.
