Hurricane Phil-s Pound Florida

Remember when the Phillies couldn't beat the Florida Marlins? Now, the shoe is on the other foot. The Phillies have taken the first two games of their three-game series with Florida to clinch a second-place finish in the National League East. The latest triumph came Friday night when the Phillies beat Florida 6-2. The hot Phils have now won nine of their last eleven games.

Cory Lidle (12-12) threw just four balls in his first 30 pitches. While he seemingly ran out of gas in the sixth inning, he still had enough to beat the Marlins, thanks to some timely hitting from the Phils.

Placido Polanco delivered a two-run homerun in the fifth inning to give the Phils a 3-2 lead over the Marlins. Polanco's homerun came off reliever Matt Perisho (5-3), who gave up three hits and two earned runs in his one inning of work. Perisho was on in relief of starter David Weathers, who went four innings for Florida.

Weathers pitched well, giving up just one run on the night. First inning doubles from Jimmy Rollins and Bobby Abreu put the Phillies up 1-0. Rollins added a solo homerun in the in the seventh to give the Phillies some insurance.

If the Phillies wanted insurance, they bought more of it in the eighth. David Bell singled and Jason Michaels doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Chase Utley was intentionally walked to load the bases and Mike Lieberthal made the Marlins pay for that decision. Lieberthal greeted reliever Rudy Seanez with a two-run base hit up the middle to give the Phillies a 6-2 advantage.

The Marlins got single runs in the second and fifth innings off Lidle.

Mike Lowell doubled to lead off the second and went to third on a ground ball. Damion Easley then delivered a sacrifice fly as the Marlins tied the game 1-1. In the fifth, Luis Castillo delivered an RBI single with runners on first and third and one out in the inning. Castillo's hit gave the Marlins a short-lived 2-1 lead over the Phils.

The series continues Saturday night when the Phillies send Eric Milton (14-5, 4.73) to the mound to face Josh Beckett (8-9, 3.87).
