PBN Gameday: April 17

The Phillies and Scranton both needed extra innings to pull out 2-1 wins on Sunday, with Scranton's bullpen playing a huge role. Reading made it past Norwich 7-2 on the strength of the top of their top three hitters in the lineup, who put up big numbers offensively. Meanwhile, Lakewood fell to Lake County to wrap up their weekend series.

Braves 2, Phillies 1 (10)

After Mike Hampton and Brett Myers shutout the opposing sides for eight innings and the bullpens did the same in the ninth, both teams were able to push across tenth inning runs.

Raul Mondesi hit a sacrifice fly off Ryan Madson (1-1) in the tenth to score pinch-runner Pete Orr with a go ahead run. From there, Madson shut down the Braves for the rest of the inning.

An error on pitcher Dan Kold (0-2) allowed the tying run to score and Placido Polanco singled off Kevin Gryboski to plate the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

Brett Myers' eight shutout innings lowered his ERA to 0.44 on the season.

Scranton 2, Syracuse 1 (14)

The Red Barons got a 14th inning homerun from John Castellano to beat Syracuse on Sunday. It was the first homerun of the season for Castellano. Earlier in the game, Ryan Howard hit his first homerun of the season for Scranton.

Amaury Telemaco started and allowed one earned run in four innings of work. The bullpen - Dan Giese, Martire Franco, Frank Perez, Geoff Geary and Brian Sanches - then threw ten innings of shutout ball to anchor the win. Geary (1-1) threw three perfect innings to get the win and Sanches picked up his first save of the year.

Reading 7, Norwich 2

Reading's tandem of relievers - Jeff Wilson and Ryan Cameron - gave them three shutout innings in relief of Carlos Chantres (1-0) in Reading's win on Sunday. Chantres allowed two earned runs in six innings.

Ryan Fleming and Michael Bourn each had three hits, with Bourn scoring three times and Fleming driving in two runs. Bourn also stole two bases to give him four stolen bases this season. Chris Roberson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. The top three hitters in the lineup - Bourn, Roberson and Fleming - went a combined 8-for-14 (.571) for Reading.

Clearwater - Off Day

Lake County 7, Lakewood 6

Andy Baldwin allowed two earned runs over five innings and Justin Cerrato (0-1) allowed another two runs to score in two innings of work as Lakewood fell to 2-9 on the season.

Sam Orr hit his first homerun of the season for Lakewood.
