PBN Notebook: Starters Hurting Clearwater

The Phils lost to the Rockies Wednesday night, but Jimmy Rollins extended his hitting streak and David Bell continued to rebound. The stats give some clues as to why the Clearwater Threshers are struggling and the Lakewood BlueClaws are tired of seeing the Suns.

Kenny Lofton has now hit in six straight, going 10-for-20 (.500) during the stretch... David Bell is continuing to turn around his season. Bell has a four game hitting streak and is hitting .357 (5-for-14) during the streak... Tim Worrell pitched a perfect top of the ninth inning for the Phillies. Worrell has struggled heavily this season, but manager Charlie Manuel insists that he hasn't lost any confidence in his setup man.

Scranton: 7-6, 1 game behind Syracuse & Ottawa.

Scranton was postponed for the second time this season. Their opening day game was postponed and made up as part of a double-header. The game will be made up as part of a double-header on Saturday July 9th.

The Red Barons are battling with Ottawa and Syracuse for the North Division lead. The Red Barons haven't fared too well against the two teams, going 0-1 against Ottawa and 1-3 against Syracuse in the early going this season.

Reading: 4-9, 3.5 games out in the Southern Division.

Jim Deschaine had hit safely in all seven games that he started coming into Wednesday night's game. His 0-for-4 against New Britain broke his streak and dropped his average as a starter from .391 to .333 (9-for-27)... Reading his hitting just .196 over their last three games... The R-Phils have scored just four runs in support of Edwin Moreno. Moreno is 1-2, 4.00 on the season... Chris Roberson and Tim Gradoville are currently tied for the longest hitting streaks for Reading. Each have hit in three straight, with Roberson hitting .364 (4-for-11) and Gradoville hitting .400 (4-for-10) during their streaks.

Clearwater: 3-10, 7 games out in the West Division.

Zack Segovia is pitching well in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. In his last two starts, Segovia is 1-1, 3.00. He has pitched 12 innings, allowing 8 hits, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. On the season, Segovia is 1-2, 3.86 for Clearwater... The Threshers are hitting .235 as a team this season and their pitching staff has an ERA of 6.00 through their first 13 games. The result is a 3-10 record and last place in the West Division. Starters have gone 2-9, 7.23, giving up 82 hits in 57 1/3 innings. That makes the relievers 1-1, 4.19 on the season.

Lakewood: 3-11, 8 games behind Hagerstown in the Northern Division.

The BlueClaws are probably tired of the Hagerstown Suns. Lakewood is 1-5 against Hagerstown (Mets) this season. The good news is that they don't see the Suns for another month when the two teams play a four game set in Lakewood starting on May 17th... Jason Crosland and Brad Harman hit their first homeruns of the season on Wednesday. Harman is hitting .353 for Lakewood.
