Batavia's Roster Looks Encouraging

The Batavia MuckDogs open their season Wednesday night at home and they appear to have gotten the cream of the crop from this year's draft. Of the Phillies top ten picks who have signed since the draft, Batavia will have eight of them on their roster.

Mike Costanzo was a lock to head to Batavia. The third base prospect was the Phillies first pick of the draft, which actually came in the second round. From the time he was picked, it was a foregone conclusion that he would sign quickly and head to Batavia to start the season. He'll start at third base for the MuckDogs.

Brett Harker and Davis Blaine, a right-hander and left-hander respectively, were taken in the fifth and sixth rounds. They will join Costanzo in Batavia.

Not surprisingly, all of the players assigned to Batavia who were taken two weeks ago in the draft are college players.

In all, the Phillies have signed 21 of their 49 draft picks and 14 of them are headed to Batavia.

Carl Galloway and John Hardy will return to Batavia after playing there last summer. They are the only position players to return to the MuckDogs. Among the pitchers, Jose Correa, Kyle Kendrick and Kevin Shepard will all return to Batavia.
