Reading 0 (0-2)
Adam Loewen (1-0) threw eight innings of shutout baseball, giving up just one hit to the Reading Phillies. Loewen was a teammate of R-Phils pitcher Scott Mathieson on Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic.
Bryan Hansen doubled off Loewen for the Phillies lone hit.
Daniel Haigwood (0-1, 12.00) lasted just three innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits and five walks. Steve Langone and Matt Sweeney combined to throw five innings of shutout ball, not walking a batter and allowing just three hits.
Clearwater 6 (2-0)
Zack Segovia (1-0, 2.57) threw seven innings, giving up just two earned runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out 11 hitters. Adam Shafer pitched a perfect ninth inning for his second save in as many games.
Lakewood 1 (0-1)
Kyle Kendrick allowed just one unearned run in his five innings of work and Andy Barb (0-1, 9.00) was tagged for one earned run in an inning of relief work as Lakewood lost their season opener.
The BlueClaws had just four hits, with two of them - including a homerun - coming from Welinson Baez.
The game lasted just seven innings because of rain.
Minor Matters: Baez' homerun was the first for the Phillies' minor league system this season... After two games, the Reading Phillies are hitting just .159 as a team... Meanwhile, the Threshers, who lost 95 games last season have hit at a .297 clip with a 3.00 ERA to win their first two games of the season... The four Phillies' minor league teams are hitting a combined .212 in the early going... Zack Segovia's 11 strikeouts are the second most in all of the minor leagues this season. It's second only to Bowie's Adam Loewen, who struck out 12 Reading Phillies' hitters Friday night... Reading Phillies players were hit with Opening Day drug tests, courtesy of Major League Baseball... Angel Chavez was in the Reading lineup, but surprisingly, was at third base, with Jesus Merchan playing at short. Chavez was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.
