Scouting The Opponents: Arizona Diamondbacks

Keith Glab of was a guest on Philly Baseball News Radio recently and talked about the Arizona Diamondbacks and what fans may see during the Phillies and Diamondbacks series in Phoenix. Here is a look at the Diamondbacks, including audio extras for our premium users.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are hanging right around the .500 mark and sticking close to the top of the NL West standings. They've been able to stay close even though they've had a lot of injuries to deal with. The D'backs just got their ace, Randy Johnson, off the DL and the Phillies will see him on Wednesday when he opposes another veteran in Jamie Moyer.

The Phillies will also see Arizona's version of Cole Hamels during the series when they face Micah Owings. Owings has been a winner at every level and was ranked as sixth best prospect in the Diamondbacks organization by coming into the season.

Pitching has been a key for the Diamondbacks this season. Their team ERA is 3.68, just over a run per game less than the Phillies 4.75 ERA.

Partly because of a decent minor league system and partly because of the injuries that they've had during the season, the Diamondbacks have a number of young players on their roster. Stephen Drew, Alberto Callaspo and Conor Jackson are just a few of the young players that have played roles for the Diamondbacks in the first month of the season. Drew, the younger brother of J.D. Drew, is still developing, but some scouts believe that when all is said and done, he'll be the best of the Drew brothers. Jackson is splitting time at first base with veteran Tony Clark and Callaspo is getting some playing time as Chad Tracy battles an oblique injury.
