Phillies Add Veteran Branyan

The Phillies looked for some bench help and found veteran infielder russell Branyan. The Indians had just signed Branyan on Tuesday, but sold him off to the Phillies on Thursday.

The Phillies haven't gotten a lot of production out of their third basemen this season and they needed some help on the bench. With that in mind, the Phillies bought the contract of infielder Russell Branyan from the Cleveland Indians on Thursday. Branyan had barely unpacked, having signed a deal with the Indians on Tuesday and then being assigned to AAA Buffalo.

Branyan started the year with the San Diego Padres, but was released on July 28, after hitting just .197 with 7 home runs and 19 RBI in 61 games. He played just one game at Buffalo - ironically, against the Phillies AAA affiliate Ottawa Lynx - and went 0-for-4 in that game.

The Phillies will make a move to add Branyan to their 25 man roster.
