Phillies Unveil Alternate Home Uniforms

To celebrate their 125th Anniversary, the Phillies unveiled a new alternate home uniform that has a definite throwback feel to them.

The year was 1948 and two future Hall of Famers and fan favorites in Philadelphia - Richie Ashburn and Robin Roberts - were making their rookie debuts. The uniforms they wore were very similar to ones unveiled by the Phillies as an alternate uniform for the 2008 season. Roberts was on hand for the ceremony and modeled one of the new jerseys, while Jimmy Rollins and Cole Hamels modeled the full uniforms at a noon reception. The uniforms will be worn for daytime home games in 2008 as part of the Phillies celebration of their 125 years of baseball. The uniforms will make their official debut on April 3rd, the first Business Person's Special of the season.

David Buck, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Advertising Sales for the Phillies, said that the selection of the style of the 1948 uniforms was no accident since two Philadelphia favorites made their debuts that season. "It is fitting that we bring back a uniform style from their rookie season," said Buck of Roberts and Ashburn. Buck described the uniforms as "a throwback uniform with a modern touch."

The new uniform jersey and cap will first be available only at the Majestic Clubhouse store at Citizens Bank Park until they are made available in other areas through Modell's Sporting Goods.

The home uniforms will mark the first time since 1950 that the Phillies have not worn their traditional red pinstripes. The 1950 Phillies were the first to wear the red pinstripes and they've been a staple of Phillies uniforms ever since.
