Phillies Prospect #65: Joseph Rocchio

Joseph Rocchio knew that if he was to be picked in the first ten rounds of the 2007 Draft, he would probably have to sneak in near the end of the round. That's exactly what he did when the Phillies took him.

Acquired: Drafted by the Phillies in the 10th round of the 2007 Draft.

B: R T: R  /  Height: 6' 4"  /  Weight: 200 lbs.

2007 Team/League: Williamsport (NY/Penn League)

Games/Games Started in 2007: 12 games/2 games started

School: Cal State Northridge

Repertoire:  Joseph Rocchio has deceptive speed on his fastball and can get late movement to keep hitters a little off stride. His curve and change-up are good pitches, but will need to show some improvement, while his slider is developing well and could be a good pitch for him.

Pitching Style: There isn't too much fancy about Rocchio. He pretty much goes after hitters and will pitch inside, especially on right-handers. The best part of Rocchio's game is that he pitches down in the zone with everything and when he does lose control, he generally misses low where hitters can't do much damage on his mistakes. Mechanically, he's decent, but as with most young pitchers, he could use some fine tuning. Rocchio didn't have the greatest numbers at Cal State Northridge (10-21, 5.94), but he picked up a lot from the Phillies minor league instructors and could be a nice find.

Projection: Last season Rocchio made just two starts at Williamsport and the Phillies haven't tipped their hand as to how they're going to use him. He may be best suited to pitch out of the bullpen, because of his ability to get groundballs.
