Pitching Style: Chance Chapman tends to go right after hitters and throws strikes. A real key for Chapman is to keep the ball down in the zone, which he has done well in both college and the pros. Last season, he allowed just one home run in just under 80 innings of work for Williamsport and also allowed just 20 walks. While Oral Roberts University isn't exactly the cream of the crop of college baseball institutions, Chapman made his mark there, finishing his college career as the school's all-time ERA leader. In his first pro season, Chapman recorded almost two ground ball outs for every fly ball out.

Projection: The Phillies love Chapman's arm and he should be able to stick as a starter rather than moving to the bullpen. It will be tempting to put him into a relief role because he gets a good amount of ground balls, has a pretty high strikeout ratio and keeps the ball in the park. He pitched well at Williamsport and figures to have a shot at starting the season in Lakewood's starting rotation in 2008. While it's difficult to project just how high Chapman will be able to climb, scouts believe that he has at least a better than average shot at winding up as a middle-of-the-rotation starter at the Major League level. He keeps the ball down and that's exactly what the Phillies are looking for. Keep in mind too, that since the Phillies have some pretty good starting pitching ahead of Chapman, they have time to be patient. The other alternative is that with the depth of starting pitching, they may give into temptation and put him in a relief role, figuring that he won't need any extra time to develop and that there may not be a spot for him when he would be ready.

  • Had a four-game stretch where he posted a 0.71 ERA late in the season and lowered his ERA to 1.86 before pushing it back up when he struggled in his final start of the 2007 season.
