Phillies Winter Meetings Preview

Well, the gang's assembled in Las Vegas and it's time for the annual Winter Meetings to begin. Like all teams, the Phillies have their list of things to do and we've got a peek at some of the items on the agenda.

Many fans think of the Winter Meetings as a time to pull off deals, but the time is also spent schmoozing agents and free agents. The Phillies will be doing a chunk of their own schmoozing, too.

They'll start by touching base on Jamie Moyer and his response will gauge where the Phillies go next. If it starts looking like Moyer will be exiting Philadelphia, the Phillies will get a lot more serious about pitchers like Derek Lowe or A.J. Burnett.

Also look for the Phillies to touch base with some outfield possibilities. Raul Ibanez is a popular choice, but may not be the best fit for the Phillies, considering that he's a left-handed hitter and will cost them a prospect for signing him. Rocco Baldelli is a much better fit for the Phillies, since he's a right-handed hitter and doesn't require the loss of a prospect to be signed.

Outside of those free agents, the Phillies will look for a trade partner to fill their outfield hole in left field. The Chicago White Sox have Jermaine Dye, but have been asking too much for him in return and so far, haven't lowered their asking price.

The Phillies will also talk to free agents Nick Punto, Mark Loretta and Jerry Hairston Jr.

It should be a busy week, culminating with the annual Rule 5 Draft on Thursday.
