Pitching Style: Trevor May had a couple of teams who were very interested in him on Draft Day of 2008. The Cubs and Phillies were the two main competitors for May's services and both were drawn by his ability to throw a strong fastball and both saw the potential for May to build on his repertoire of pitches. The Phillies are going to work with May to develop his pitches and believe that as he matures and they are able to tinker with his mechanics, he should develop more velocity on his fastball, which is his leading pitch right now.
Projection: The Phillies believe that May, who has the size and build that they like in a pitcher, has the potential to develop into a quality pitcher, but may require some time and work to get to the point where he can get better hitters out on a consistent basis. One thing that will need improvement is May's ability to throw strikes and command all of his pitches. In just 12 innings in the Gulf Coast League, May walked seven hitters last season. On the other hand, he has the ability to strikeout hitters when he's on.
ETA: As with a lot of young pitchers who are drafted out of high school, May is going to need some work. All teams know two things when they take a high school pitcher outside of the first round or two; one, there's always the chance that he'll head to college and not sign, which May didn't do. And two, he's going to be a bit of a project. It's likely that May will need to spend at least all of 2009 in a short-season league and possibly longer. Even once he hits the full-season ranks, he could start slowly.
