Draft Prospects Not Good For Phillies

As things stand right now, the Phillies don't pick until the 80th overall pick in the 2009 Draft. So, with that in mind, let's take a look back at how 80th picks have fared over the history of the draft.

1965    Fred Rath, RHP, Chicago White Sox - Reached the majors with the White Sox in 1968 and pitched parts of two seasons, finishing his career with a 0-2, 4.70 mark in eight games.

1966     Robert Desjardins, C, Minnesota - Never reached the majors.

1967    Steve Yeager, C, LA Dodgers - Went on to have a long and fairly productive major league career, playing 15 seasons for the Dodgers. Yeager was primarily known for his defensive skills and is credited with inventing the neck flap that catchers wear on their masks after being hit in the throat by a broken bat.

1968    Allen Collins, C, Boston - Never reached the majors.

1969    Bob O'Brien, OF, LA Dodgers - Started four games for the Dodgers in 1971, going 2-2, 3.00, but never returned to the majors after that.

1970    Greg Gross, OF, Houston - Played in 17 seasons, including ten with the Phillies, primarily as a pinch-hitter. Was a member of the 1980 World Champions and the 1983 National League Champions and is now the hitting coach for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

1971    David Harper, RHP, Texas - Never reached the majors.

1972    William Daniels, RHP, Minnesota - Never reached the majors.

1973    Daniel Smith, OF, Montreal - Never reached the majors.

1974    Harris Price, C, Chicago White Sox - Never reached the majors.

1975    Garrett Strong, OF, San Francisco - Never reached the majors.

1976    James Stehle, LHP, Chicago White Sox - Never reached the majors.

1977    Scott Anderson, RHP, Montreal - Never reached the majors.   

1978    Mike Coyne, OF, Toronto - Never reached the majors.

1979    David Howard, OF, NY Mets - Never reached the majors.

1980    Craig Jones, RHP, Atlanta - Never reached the majors.

1981    Lee Guetterman, LHP, Seattle - Pitched in 11 seasons and finished his career with a 4.33 ERA and a 38-36 record with 25 saves.

1982    Phil Stephenson, 1B, Oakland - Played 17 games with the Cubs in '89 and went on to play 177 with the Padres from '89 to '92. Finished his career with a .201 average.

1983    Jeff Reece, LHP, Milwaukee - Never reached the majors.

1984    Kent Torve, 3B, Chicago White Sox - Never reached the majors.

1985    Steve Searcy, LHP, Detroit - Pitched parts of four seasons with Detroit before being released and signed by the Phillies. He pitched for the Phillies in '91 and '92 before being traded to the Dodgers with Julio Peguero for Stan Javier, but he never pitched for L.A.

1986    Tim Layana, RHP, NY Yankees - Pitched in parts of three seasons with the Reds and Giants, going 5-5, 4.56 in 78 games.

1987    David Henderson, SS, Houston - Never reached the majors.

1988    Charlie White, OF, St. Louis - Never reached the majors.

1989    Ross Powell, LHP, Cincinnati - Pitched with the Reds, Astros and Pirates over three seasons, going 0-5, 5.40 in 48 games.

1990     Dan Tobin, RHP, Cincinnati - Never reached the majors.

1991    Todd Hollandsworth, OF, LA Dodgers - Won the NL Rookie of the year in 1996 and played 12 seasons in the majors, hitting .273 for his career.

1992    Trevor Humphry, RHP, Philadelphia - Never reached higher than High-A Clearwater in five minor league seasons with the Phillies.

1993    Mike Welch, RHP, NY Mets - Was acquired by the Phillies in December of 1997 for pitcher Hector Mercado. Pitched with the Phillies in 1998 and went 0-2, 8.27 in ten games.

1994    Oscar Robles, SS, Houston - Has played 163 games in the majors with the Dodgers and Padres. Played 93 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley last season.

1995     Darrel Dent, OF, Baltimore - Never reached the majors.

1996    Widd Workman, RHP, San Diego - Never reached the majors.

1997    Joey Nation, LHP, Atlanta - Started two games for the Cubs in 2000 and lost both of them, posting a 6.94 ERA.

1998    Gregory Porter, SS, Cincinnati - Never reached the majors.

1999    Travis Anderson, RHP, Houston - Never reached the majors.

2000    Tommy Murphy, SS, LA Angels - Played in 68 games with the Angels in 2006 and 2007. Spent last season in the Nationals minor league system.

2001    Lazardo Abreu, C, Seattle - Played just one season in the minors.

2002    Curtis Granderson, OF, Detroit - Has played five seasons with the Tigers and has a career .280 average.

2003    Shaun Marcum, RHP, Toronto - Has pitched four seasons with Toronto and has a 24-17, 3.95 mark in 64 games, all in relief.

2004    Steven Register, RHP, Colorado - Pitched at Triple-A Colorado Springs last season.

2005    Andrew Thompson, SS, Minnesota - Hasn't played in affiliated ball since 2006.

2006    Shelby Ford, 2B, Pittsburgh - Played at Double-A Altoona last season for the Pirates.

2007    Matt West, 3B, Texas - Played in Low-A ball for the Rangers last season.

2008    Tyler Sample, RHP, Kansas City - Pitched ten games in rookie ball last season and went 0-5, 9.00 in the Arizona League.
