Williamsport Ready To Open Season

The Williamsport CrossCutters open their 2009 New York - Penn League schedule on the road against rival State College before switching venues with the Spikes for Saturday's home opener.

Anthony Hewitt, the Phillies first round pick in 2008 (24th overall) spent his first pro season with the GCL Phillies, helping them to the Gulf Coast Championship. This season, he brings his prized bat to the Williamsport CrossCutters, who open their season June 19th in State College.

2009 draft picks making the CrossCutters roster include; right-handers Joshua Zeid who was 6-0 with Tulane University in '09 and Austin Hyatt from the University of Alabama. Outfielder Jeremy Barnes hit .353 with 15 home runs and 70 RBI's for Notre Dame in 2009.

In all, the Phillies have assigned 11 of their 50 selections to Williamsport thus far. In addition, ten players on the opening day roster played together last season for the league champion Gulf Coast League Phillies.

The Cutters roster also includes seven pitchers who saw time with Williamsport in 2008 including; Spencer Arroyo, Freddy Ballestas, Jordan Ellis, Sean Grieve, Miguel Matos, Eryk McConnell, and Korey Noles. Right-hander Luke Wertz, who spent the 2007 season in Williamsport and missed the entire 2008 campaign after right shoulder surgery, is another veteran Cutters hurler.

Interesting bloodlines on the Cutters include; left-hander Nicholas Hernandez from the University of Tulane, whose uncle Angel Hernandez is a Major League umpire and right-hander Jonathan Pettibone, whose father Jay played for the Minnesota Twins. Plus, Hyatt's brother Jared plays in the Texas Rangers organization.
