At home in Texas, Carpenter is busy each day taking grounders and practicing various plays at second base. He plans to report to camp two weeks early. Carpenter expects to look good in practice, but knows the true test will be when games begin.
The right fielder, committed to play for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, looks at it as an extension of spring training. Though not captured here, Beltran also made some very good remarks as the Baseball Writers' Dinner Sunday night. It is being broadcast Monday night on KMOX radio.
The second baseman, from the Bay Area, had to deal with the Giants going all the way first-hand. He admits he is spoiled by going to the playoffs for his first two years, but the team expects to play in the post-season. Manager Mike Matheny makes him want to play harder.
Molina talked about working with the minds of young pitchers to give them confidence on the mound. He sidestepped any characterization of himself as a team leader, instead saying he is a teammate, a member of a family, trying to win games. He says he is already in Florida, ready to work with any pitchers whenever they are ready.
The reserve catcher has lost 10 pounds, the result of off-season workouts with Yadier Molina and prescribed by Molina's trainer. Living in the Palm Beach area already means Cruz will be ready to start catching the Cardinals pitchers as soon as they arrive in Florida.
The new hitting coach is very energized and comfortable. Mabry believes the mental side of the game is the separation point for hitters. He mentioned one of the jobs of his new assistant Bengie Molina would be breaking down pitching videos, while noting that no team can have too many Molinas. He closed by praising Oscar Taveras with noting that Kolten Wong and Greg Garcia can do nothing but improve their stock if they come to camp ready.
The third baseman will write down his goals upon reporting to camp on February 10, but one will be again to play a full season. Another will be increased consistency, which should lead to better numbers. He acknowledged a dropoff in September.
It seemed fitting that the team's on-field leader was our final interview subject. He gave a general state of the team report in terms of 2013 preparation.
