Tide Women Aim For SEC Road Win
Alabama had an open date during the past week. The Crimson Tide, 10-12 overall and 3-6 in SEC competition, returns to action at 2 p.m. CST today against the Missouri Tigers in Columbia. Mizzou is 14-9 overall, 3-7 in SEC play.
The Crimson Tide and Tigers have a relatively thin history, only four previous games with Mizzou holding a 3-1 advantage. Last year, Missouri was a runaway winner in Tuscaloosa, 88-64. That was an historic anomaly as three prior contests were decided by a total of only 11 points. The Tide's lone win came in 2002 in Columbia.
Alabama had its final open date of the season on Thursday, allowing the Crimson Tide to go back to work on fundamentals following its 64-54 loss to No. 10 Tennessee. Alabama will look to end its two-game losing skid at Missouri.
Senior Shafontaye Myers leads the Alabama offense with an average of 15.2 points per game, followed by junior Daisha Simmons at 13.5 points per game and freshman Ashley Williams with 11.5 points per game. Williams also leads the team in rebounds with 6.0 boards per contest.
As a team, the Tide is shooting over .400, which is something it has not done in seven seasons.
The Missouri Tigers boast some of the best shooters in the SEC, ranking second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (.382) and free throw percentage (.758). Like Alabama, Mizzou will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak having dropped road contests at South Carolina, 62-78, and LSU, 58-75. The Tigers are led by senior Bri Kulas, who leads the SEC in scoring at 18.9 points per game, while junior Morgan Eye boasts a league-best 3.3 three-point field goals made per game.
Alabama's Power of Pink event will, once again, run in conjunction with the Play 4Kay initiative, which is an opportunity for women's basketball across the nation to raise awareness for breast cancer. Since its inception in 2007, the Play 4Kay initiative has raised over $2.8 million to support women's cancer research. The Crimson Tide will be a part of both Missouri's and Arkansas' Play 4Kay games on Sunday, Feb. 9, and Thursday, Feb. 13, respectively, before holding its home event against Texas A&M on Sunday, Feb. 16. Alabama will wear several pink accessories including shoes, socks and headbands, as well as the "United We Fight" Nike shooting shirts, and will wear its pink uniforms at home against the Aggies.
