Pirates claim Brent Morel from Toronto

The Pirates claimed third baseman Brent Morel from the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday afternoon.

Infielder Chase d'Arnaud has been designated for assignment to make room for Morel. d'Arnaud, 27, missed much of last season with a torn thumb ligament and hasn't played for the Pirates since 2012.

Morel was the White Sox's starting third baseman as a 24-year-old rookie in 2011, but hit just .245 with a .653 OPS in 126 games and has played sparingly in the majors since then. Chicago waived him in December after he hit .266 with six homers and a .751 OPS at Triple-A last season. Morel was claimed off waivers by Toronto on December 23.

The right-handed hitting third baseman has a career average of .229 (141-for-616) with 23 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs and 54 RBI in 194 games in parts of four seasons in the big leagues.
