Pirates top prospect Gregory Polanco is off to a hot start in spring training. Polanco flashed his potential again on Tuesday from the No. 3 spot, drilling an RBI double to right that scored Jaff Decker in the third. Polanco also had an infield single in the first and finished 2 for 3. The two hits came off Detroit Tigers starter Rick Porecello.
It was his second start this spring and his first appearance as the No. 3 hitter.
Polanco is batting .333 this spring and is tied with Pedro Alvarez, Andrew McCutchen and Chris McGuiness with a team-best five hits.
Pirates' general manager Neil Huntington has said several times that the prized outfield prospect will break camp with the major league club. Polanco's play is making that a difficult decision.
"He's doing some good things," Pirates' manager Clint Hurdle said. "The awareness has picked up (when) you hit a guy third. … (Porcello) hangs a breaking ball, and (Polanco) bangs it off the wall. He has a good path to the ball and focuses on the big part of the field."
Polanco is rated as the No. 10 overall prospect by Scout.com.
