Before the games, Elkins and his peers do everything the other coaches do in uniform including hitting fungoes, pitching batting practice, working with hitters and the like. During the contests, the coaches change modes and into street clothes. Sitting behind home plate, they scout the day's opposition.
The new role helps the organization build an in-house pipeline of future coaches and scouts while the individuals get a feeling for which of the jobs may interest them most over the long term.
