Spring's in the air as Truck Day arrives in Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Pirates are thinking spring. Pitchers and catchers must report for duty Feb. 19, so the team's equipment was loaded onto trucks Wednesday at PNC Park and is heading south.

The process started back in November.

“We got ordering and then waiting for the orders to come in and inventorying all the orders and then actually packing it up and then getting it down there,” Pirates Equipment/Clubhouse Manager Scott Bonnett said.

Crews loaded more than 5,000 packages onto the truck Wednesday. Those packages include more than 6,000 baseballs,  12 cases of bubblegum, 12 cases of sunflower seeds, jerseys and gear, as well as a lot of personal items.

The Bucs will be back in Pittsburgh in just 53 days to start the season.

Pirates’ pitchers and catchers are scheduled to have their first official workout on Friday, Feb. 19. The full squad is set to have their first full workout on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

The Pirates’ first Spring Training game of the year is Tuesday, March 1 against the Detroit Tigers.
