Braves sign utility-man Sean Rodriguez

The Atlanta Braves have reached agreement with free-agent infielder Sean Rodriguez on a two-year deal worth more than $11 million.

Fox Sports first reported the deal.

In the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Rodriguez, 31, averaged .260 with 22 home runs and 73 RBIs. He finished last season with 18 home runs, 56 RBIs and a .270 batting average, all of which were career highs.

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington had made it clear in late September that he'd like to keep Rodriguez in Pittsburgh.

"We'd love to have Sean remain in a Pirate uniform," Huntington told Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "Given what he's done this year, we would fully anticipate that there's going to be quite a market out there for him."

Rodriguez, who turns 32 in April, played seven positions in 2016. The Miami native is a career .234 hitter with 112 doubles, 67 home runs, a .303 OBP and .390 slugging percentage in 903 games over nine seasons, including seven in the American League with the Angels and Rays before spending the past two with the Pirates.
