Josh Bell Undergoes Knee Surgery

Pirates outfielder/first baseman Josh Bell underwent surgery Wednesday to remove a “loose body” that was causing discomfort in his left knee during his off-season workouts, according to the team.

Bell made the Pirates aware of the problem, and was then evaluated by the team’s medical staff in Pittsburgh and by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas.

According to the release from the Pirates, surgery was recommended and performed Wednesday by Meister.

With this type of procedure, a player can typically return to baseball activities in two to four weeks.  However, Bell’s official status for opening day is “to be determined.”

Bell batted .273 with three home runs and 19 RBI in 39 games with the Pirates last season.
