Garner Pays Homage to Tanner

Perhaps the best part of this 77th All-Star game was seeing former Pirates manager Chuck Tanner back in uniform. National League manager Phil Garner requested, and was granted, special permission to have Tanner in the dugout.

Tanner, of course, managed Garner and the Pirates to the 1979 World Series title.

"That was Chuck's finest hour as a manager," Garner said. "And as far as I'm concerned, I probably don't have a baseball career to this extent without Chuck Tanner. In a small way, hopefully, this honors Chuck and what he has meant to baseball all over, but particularly here in Pittsburgh."
