Bucs Put Wilson On DL

The Pirates have placed shortstop Jack Wilson on the 15-day disabled list, and promoted shortstop Brian Bixler from Class AAA Indianapolis. It is the first time in his career that Wilson has gone on the DL.

Wilson left Thursday's game at Atlanta after he hit a seventh inning single and aggravated the injury during the run to first. He missed the past two games against Florida.

The injury might have healed in time for Wilson to return late this week but, with second baseman Freddy Sanchez day to day because of sore right shoulder, management determined it could not afford having two everyday middle infielders who were less than 100 percent.

"With Freddy (Sanchez) and me being down at the same time, one of us has got to go," Wilson said. "It's a pretty easy choice, with him still being able to do stuff and being right around the corner from recovery."

Wilson is eligible to return for the Pirates' series in Chicago that begins April 18.
