Pirates Sign Sixth Round Pick

The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed highly touted right-handed pitcher Zack Von Rosenberg, the club's sixth-round selection in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.

The 6-foot-5 righthander, who was committed to play for Louisiana State University before signing with the Pirates, went 11-1 with 141 strikeouts and a 0.60 ERA in 91 innings this year as a senior for Zachary (LA) High School.

"Zach is a very projectable high school right-handed starting pitcher with a quality frame, delivery, arm action, mix of pitches and feel to pitch," said Pirates Senior Vice President and General Manager Neal Huntington. "He has a quality breaking ball and change up to complement a fastball that he commands very well. He has all the attributes to project an increase in the velocity and quality of all of his pitches in the future. We are very pleased to add a pitcher of Zach's upside to our system."

This season Von Rosenberg guided Zachary High to the school's third straight 4A state crown and pitched and won the state championship game for the fourth straight year after also accomplishing the same feat while pitching for Barbe-Lake Charles High School as a freshman in 2006. Von Rosenberg was also named the 2009 Gatorade Player-of-the-Year for baseball in the state of Louisiana and finished his high school career with a record of 42-7.

With the signing of Von Rosenberg, the Pirates have now signed 21 of their 51 selections from this year's draft, including each of their top 10.
