Cardinals Tuesday Roster Moves

The St. Louis Cardinals made at least seven roster moves on Tuesday.

Catcher Steven Hill was optioned to Triple-A Memphis, replaced by Bryan Anderson. Infielder Tyler Greene, on a short rehab stint with A-Advanced Palm Beach, has also been optioned to the Triple-A Redbirds. To make room for newly-signed Zack Cox on the 40-man roster, pitcher Adam Ottavino was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

The contract of Hill, 25, was purchased from Double-A Springfield six days ago. The right-handed hitter appeared in one game in his major league debut, going 1-for-3 including a solo home run. The 2009 Texas League All-Star will be making his Triple-A debut with the Redbirds.

Greene, who turns 27 on Tuesday, was almost optioned out on August 1 when the Cardinals activated Jake Westbrook via trade. However, Greene's agent reportedly contacted the team and informed them the infielder's hand injury was worse than had been suspected. Greene was then placed on the disabled list and began a rehab assignment in Florida last Friday. With Palm Beach in eight plate appearances, he went 0-for-7 with four strikeouts and a walk.

When Jason LaRue was injured in the fight in Cincinnati last Tuesday, the Cardinals needed a reserve catcher over night. The Redbirds were in Reno and Anderson was on the shelf after having taken a ball to his catching mask. Hill was called up from Springfield instead. Anderson, 23, returned to action with Memphis on Friday and has gone 3-for-11 since with a double, a home run and two RBI. He made his MLB debut earlier this season.

Ottavino, 24, was placed on the disabled list on July 15. The Cardinals announced he would undergo shoulder surgery. Four days later, after a second opinion was solicited, the pitcher elected to rehab the injury instead. As of last week, the right-hander had not yet been cleared to pick up a baseball and as such, it seems a long shot for him to return this season.

To accommodate the activation of Tuesday's starting pitcher for Memphis, Evan MacLane, the Redbirds placed Mark Hamilton onto the temporary inactive list. The first baseman left the team to return home for the birth of his child.

Memphis reliever Matt Scherer has been taken off the disabled list and transferred to A-Advanced Palm Beach. The 27-year-old right-hander has been out since June 19 due to a wrist injury.

To backfill for injured Tommy Pham, the Double-A Springfield Cardinals will be receiving infielder Jermaine Curtis from Palm Beach. Curtis made his Double-A introduction from July 3-29, but after hitting just .208 in 11 games, he was sent back to Palm Beach. His line in the Florida State League is a power-free .267/.390/.317 in 191 at-bats over 56 games.
