Tanner Scheppers Profile
The Texas Rangers activated right-handed reliever Koji Uehara from the disabled list and optioned Tanner Scheppers to Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.
Uehara, 37, had been out since early June with a right lat muscle strain. He aggravated the injury while rehabbing in July. The Japanese hurler has made 21 relief appearances for the Rangers this season, posting a 2.01 earned-run average in 22.1 innings. He has yielded 14 hits, walked only two, and struck out 22.
Scheppers, 25, will presumably make a brief return to the minor leagues, as he's expected to be recalled when major league rosters expand on September 1. The Fresno State product has a 4.56 ERA in 29 major league games. Over 25.2 innings, he has yielded 36 hits, walked six, and struck out 23.
Scheppers had pitched well for the Rangers of late. After surrendering 11 runs on 20 hits in his first 12.1 big league innings, he'd given up just two earned runs in 13.1 frames.
