Winterball Roundup - 10/13

Right-hander Adalberto Flores worked scoreless relief for Surprise on Wednesday while Joey Butler picked up a pair of singles. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise 4 - Peoria Javelinas 7
1-1, 0.0 GU

The Javelinas defeated Surprise despite committing six errors in the contest.

Right fielder Joey Butler got the start and batted fifth in the Rafters' lineup on Wednesday afternoon. He singled twice in five trips with a strikeout and a stolen base. Leadoff man Engel Beltre was 0-for-4 with a walk and a steal. Davis Stoneburner––generally a middle infielder––played at third base and fanned three times in four hitless at-bats.

Relief pitcher Adalberto Flores was recently re-signed to a minor league deal by the Rangers, which isn't a surprise considering he was assigned to the Arizona Fall League. The 23-year-old finished off a strong season at Double-A Frisco, posting a 4.33 ERA while walking 20 and striking out 61 in 60.1 innings.

Flores worked 1.1 scoreless frames in his AFL debut on Wednesday. The 6-foot-7 hurler gave up one hit, walked one, and fanned one. He flashed a 91-93 mph fastball to go along with a curveball and a changeup.

Two former Rangers prospects played against Surprise. Matt Lawson, who was sent to Seattle in the Cliff Lee deal, played shortstop and went 0-for-4 with a pair of errors. Lawson was a full-time second baseman with Texas. Reliever Matt Nevarez––traded to Houston for Ivan Rodriguez last season––earned the save with a scoreless ninth, flashing a fastball that topped out at 95.

Venezuelan Winter League

Renny Osuna was the only Ranger to appear in Wednesday's action. The La Guaira shortstop batted leadoff and went 0-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout.

The 25-year-old won't be found on any Rangers prospect lists, but he is a valuable player for his versatility and strong baseball skills. Osuna earned Texas League All-Star honors this season while hitting .293 with 21 doubles and 20 stolen bases in 119 games for Double-A Frisco.

Osuna, who checks in at 6-foot-0, 172-pounds, isn't particularly powerful, but he has a solid approach that allows him to use all fields. His athleticism also gives him the ability to play adequate defense at second base, shortstop, and third base. The Caracas native has played a large role for La Guaira each of the last three seasons.

Free agent utilityman Hernan Iribarren, who spent the 2010 season at Triple-A Oklahoma City, was 0-for-5 with one strikeout. He batted leadoff and played in left field.

Mexican Pacific League

The circuit has begun its 2010 campaign, but there will be no Rangers players participating this season.

Dominican Winter League

The Dominican Winter League will begin its season on October 22.

Puerto Rican Winter League

The season in Puerto Rico will also commence on October 22.
