Winterball Roundup - 12/26

The Dominican Winter League kicked off its round robin playoff schedule on Sunday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action.

La Guaira's offense collected 14 hits on Sunday, but none of them came from Rangers products. Designated hitter Max Ramirez went 0-for-5 while defensive replacement David Paisano was 0-for-1. Renny Osuna appeared as a pinch runner but didn't get a plate appearance.

Scuffling La Guaira lefty Joe Ortiz faced one batter and yielded a game-winning bases-loaded single to end the contest.

Three Rangers were in the Magallanes starting lineup on Sunday––centerfielder Endy Chavez, right fielder Erold Andrus, and third baseman Andres Blanco. Chavez (1/4) and Blanco (1/5) had one single apiece.

Andrus (.284/.395/.379) was 1-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an outfield assist at home plate.

Dominican Winter League

The Dominican Winter League's real season began on Sunday––its 18-game round robin playoff schedule between the circuit's top four clubs.

After Licey failed to qualify for the postseason, centerfielder Engel Beltre was picked up by the Leones del Escogido. The 21-year-old batted sixth and went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

Toros del Este left fielder Esteban German had a double, an RBI, and a strikeout in four at-bats.

Puerto Rican Winter League

No Rangers appeared on Sunday.

Mexican Pacific League

The Mexican Pacific League was the only circuit to play games on Christmas day, though no Rangers played in those contests. Sunday was also Rangerless in Mexico.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

The Bravos took home the 2010 Liga Paralela title with a best-of-three series victory over Caracas. The season concluded on December 22.

That Caracas club featured 19-year-old shortstop Edwin Garcia, who appeared in 23 games and went 15-for-66 (.227) with four doubles and a home run. He had 13 walks against only nine strikeouts.

Guillermo Moscoso played most of the season with the big Caracas club but started his winterball campaign with two short Liga Paralela starts. The right-hander yielded four runs (two earned) in 2.1 innings.

Anzoategui hurler Jonathan Rojas shined over three starts, tossing 10 scoreless innings. The 22-year-old allowed three hits while walking two and striking out seven. Rojas doesn't have any state-side experience above the rookie level, but his strong performance earned him two appearances with the LVBP Caribes team.

David Paisano and Renny Osuna turned in impressive performances with the big La Guaira club in '09, but both were largely relegated to Liga Paralela this year after early season slumps.

Paisano played 25 games in Liga Paralela and hit .283 (30-for-106) with nine doubles, six walks, and five stolen bases in eight attempts.

The versatile Osuna played just about all over the diamond––appearing in 21 contests––and posted a .280/.314/.512 slash line with nine doubles, two triples, and two round-trippers in 87 plate appearances.

Lefty reliever Joe Ortiz pitched most of the campaign with the LVBP team but hurled three scoreless innings in three minor league relief appearances.
