Rangers Winterball Roundup - 10/8

Leury Garcia got the start at second base in Saturday's Surprise Saguaros contest. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise 7 – (@) Peoria 1
4-0, 1.5 GU

The Saguaros are the last remaining unbeaten team in the Fall League after trouncing Peoria on Saturday.

Leury Garcia, who is normally a shortstop, batted ninth and played at second base in the game. The speedy 20-year-old prospect went 1-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.

The switch-hitter had an up-and-down regular season at High-A Myrtle Beach, leading to a .259/.306/.342 slash line with 30 stolen bases in 109 contests. While Garcia has made improvements as a hitter, it's his plus-plus speed and excellent defensive tools that make him an intriguing prospect. Garcia has excellent range to go along with plus-plus arm strength, though he must still work to cut down on his error totals.

Catcher Elio Sarmiento saw his first Arizona Fall League action. Also a switch-hitter, Sarmiento played at Double-A Frisco this season. He had one single in five at-bats on Saturday.

Baseball World Cup

Saturday's contest between the 3-2 U.S. squad and the undefeated hosting Panama (5-0) was washed out. The Americans will take on Puerto Rico (3-3) in a must-win game on Sunday.
