Arizona Fall League: Surprise 6 – Salt River 13

After the Arizona Fall League took Sunday off, the six clubs were back in action on Monday. Saguaros third baseman Mike Olt turned in his second multi-homer game in four contests thus far. Overall, the former supplemental first-round pick was 3-for-4 with two round-trippers, a walk, and two runs batted in.

The other Rangers' position player in the game––nine-hole hitting DH Ryan Strausborger––had a single, a triple, and a walk in four plate appearances. He also drove home a run.

Righty reliever Ryan Kelly turned in a clean frame during his first Fall League outing, but he was knocked around on Monday. The former Pirates prospect coughed up four runs in two-thirds of an inning, giving up two hits and walking two. He struck out one.

Kelly's fastball velocity, which ranged between 92-96 mph during the regular season, was down in the 89-92 mph range on Monday. He recorded his lone strikeout on an 87 mph cutter.

Sinkerballing and sidarming right-hander Johan Yan gave up a run on four hits in 1.1 innings. As usual, Yan's fastball was clocked by pitch f/x in the 86-90 mph range, and his sweeping breaking ball sat between 72-76 mph.

Baseball World Cup

The U.S. dropped a 6-1 decision to Canada on Sunday, and third baseman Tom Mendonca was 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts. The Americans advanced to the knockout stage on the strength of Monday's 5-0 defeat of the hosting Panama club.

In the game against Panama, Mendonca socked a solo home run for his only hit in four trips. First baseman Chad Tracy was 0-for-3 with a walk.
