Rangers Winterball Roundup – 10/13

Sidearming right-hander Johan Yan's excellent 2011 campaign continued on Thursday, as he struck out four of the five batters he faced in 1.2 perfect frames. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise 6 – (@) Phoenix 2

The Surprise club continued to tear through the Fall League competition with its seventh victory in the first eight games. The Rangers' one pitcher in the game was dominant, but the two position players struggled.

Sidearm right-handed reliever Johan Yan retired all five batters he faced, getting four strikeouts. The Dominican Republic native threw 15 of his 23 pitches for strikes.

Mike Olt, who has been among the AFL's best players thus far, punched out four times in five hitless at-bats while also committing a pair of errors in the field. Right fielder Ryan Strausborger was 0-for-3.

Baseball World Cup

The Americans picked up a 2-1 victory over Australia in seven innings. Third baseman Tom Mendonca singled once in two at-bats while first baseman Chad Tracy was 0-for-2 with a run-scoring sacrifice fly.

Venezuelan Winter League

Left-hander Joe Ortiz picked up his second hold in as many nights with a 1-2-3 eighth inning that included one punchout. The diminutive reliever features an 89-92 mph fastball to go with a plus slider. He posted a 2.15 ERA at High-A Myrtle Beach this season while logging 67 innings. He yielded 54 hits while walking 14 and fanning 55.

The 21-year-old Ortiz, who is listed at just 5-foot-7, 175-pounds, will likely begin the 2012 season at Double-A Frisco.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

Young centerfielder Eduard Pinto batted leadoff for the Navegantes club and singled twice in four at-bats.

Mexican Pacific League

The Mexican Pacific League was off on Thursday.

Dominican Winter League

Begins October 14.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Begins November 4.
