Rangers Winterball Roundup – 10/14

Third baseman Mike Olt had yet another big day in the Arizona Fall League on Friday while catcher Jose Felix got his first winterball start of the season. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

8-1, 3.5 GU

Cleanup-hitting third baseman Mike Olt bounced back from a rough day at the office on Thursday. In Friday's 16-run Saguaros outburst, Olt was 3-for-5 with a double, a sacrifice fly, and three RBI. He also struck out once.

Through his first seven Fall League games, the 23-year-old Olt is 11-for-31 (.355) with a double, four home runs, four walks, and 11 strikeouts. He has a .355/.432/.774 slash line in the small sample.

Lefty Miguel de los Santos earned the victory despite throwing only 22 of his 46 pitches for strikes. The changeup specialist surrendered two unearned runs in two innings, yielding one hit, walking three, and striking out three. He also had a balk.

De los Santos, 23, has now walked seven and struck out six in his first 4.1 Fall League innings.

Reliever Ryan Kelly followed with 1.2 scoreless frames, giving up just one single. Kelly threw 18 pitches and 11 strikes.

Baseball World Cup

After seven-inning victories over both South Korea (3-1) and Venezuela (7-4), the U.S. squad earned a spot in Saturday's bronze medal game against Canada. It's an overall disappointing World Cup for the Americans, who are the defending champions after taking home the gold medal in 2009.

Third baseman Tom Mendonca was 1-for-3 with a single and a strikeout in the game versus South Korea. Against Venezuela, Mendonca and first baseman Chad Tracy each had one single in four at-bats. Tracy also had an RBI.

Venezuelan Winter League

Shortstop Renny Osuna went 0-for-3 while batting second for La Guaira on Friday, getting his first winterball action of the season. The 26-year-old had an excellent season at Double-A Frisco but is a minor league free agent-to-be if Texas doesn't re-sign him. Osuna, who is Frisco's all-time hits leader, batted .294/.341/.404 with 20 stolen bases in 123 games.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

No Rangers appeared in the circuit on Friday.

Dominican Winter League

Batting ninth and playing center field in the Tigres del Licey season opener, Engel Beltre went 1-for-4 with a double and a run batted in.

The 21-year-old prospect is looking to turn around a disappointing regular season in which he batted just .231/.285/.300 in 118 games with Double-A Frisco. The Dominican Republic native had plenty of success in winterball last offseason, posting a .333/.366/.437 slash line in 33 contests.

Mexican Pacific League

Guasave catcher Jose Felix appeared in his first game of the winterball campaign. The Mexico native batted eighth and went 1-for-4 with a double.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Begins November 4.
