Rangers Winterball Roundup – 10/16

Left-hander Joe Ortiz continued his strong start in the Venezuelan Winter League with another scoreless inning on Sunday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise – OFF

The Arizona Fall League took Sunday off.

Baseball World Cup

The bronze medal game between the U.S. and Canada was rained out on Saturday, meaning both teams finish in a tie for third place. The Netherlands took home its first-ever Baseball World Cup victory.

In 11 tournament games, third baseman Tom Mendonca went 10-for-42 (.238) with a double, three home runs, and seven runs batted in. Chad Tracy appeared in seven games, going 3-for-26 (.115) with a double and two RBI.

The club will fly back to the United States before traveling to Mexico for the Pan American Games between October 18 and 25.

Venezuelan Winter League

Joe Ortiz picked up his third hold in as many winterball appearances on Sunday afternoon. The 5-foot-7 southpaw worked a hitless inning with one strikeout. Through three appearances, he has tossed 2.2 frames of scoreless ball, giving up one hit and fanning three without walking a batter.

Hard-throwing righty Tanner Scheppers lost the Navegantes' one-run lead in the seventh inning, as he gave up a run on three hits (two singles, one Edgardo Alfonzo double). He also struck out two.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

No Rangers appeared in the circuit on Sunday. After appearing in two games for the Navegantes club, outfielder Eduard Pinto left to attend the Rangers' Dominican Instructional League.

Dominican Winter League

Licey centerfielder Engel Beltre struck out in both of his plate appearances on Sunday before being lifted for pinch-hitter Carlos Triunfel. Carlos' brother, Alberto Triunfel, is an infield prospect in the Rangers' organization.

Mexican Pacific League

Cody Eppley worked an eight-pitch (six strike) inning for Obregon and surrendered a solo home run. He also recorded one strikeout. Catcher Jose Felix was 0-for-4 in Guasave's 7-5 loss to Mazatlan.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Begins November 4.
