Rangers Winterball Roundup – 10/19

Leonys Martin and Ryan Strausborger both went yard for the Surprise Saguaros on Wednesday afternoon. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise 6 – Salt River 0
11-2, 4.5 GU

Centerfielder Leonys Martin, playing in his first Arizona Fall League game, batted third and launched a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Overall, it was the prospect's only hit in five trips.

Ryan Strausborger belted a solo shot of his own in the fourth inning against Salt River starter and Astros prospect Dallas Keuchel. It was also his only knock of the game.

Speedy shortstop Leury Garcia singled twice in five trips as the leadoff hitter, and DH Elio Sarmiento was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Sarmiento was the only Surprise player without a knock.

Pan American Games

Team USA kicks off competition at the Pan American Games in Mexico on Thursday afternoon against the Dominican Republic. Corner infielders and Rangers farmhands Tom Mendonca and Chad Tracy will help represent the United States.

Venezuelan Winter League

No Rangers appeared in Venezuela on Wednesday, but Magallanes announced the signing of outfielder Joey Butler. The 25-year-old had a breakout campaign at Triple-A Round ROck this season, batting .322/.388/.493 in 113 games.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

No Rangers appeared in the circuit on Wednesday. After playing in two games for the Navegantes club, outfielder Eduard Pinto left to attend the Rangers' Dominican Instructional League.

Dominican Winter League

Leones del Escogido right-hander Carlos Pimentel retired both batters he faced––getting the first two outs of the ninth inning––in his club's 13-3 victory over Aguilas Cibaenas. Through his first two winterball appearances, the 21-year-old has logged 3.2 hitless frames.

Licey centerfielder Engel Beltre's slow start to the winterball campaign continued on Wednesday, as he went 0-for-2 with a strikeout and a walk before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the ninth inning He also committed a fielding error.

In his first four games, Beltre is 1-for-12 with a double, a walk, and four punchouts.

Mexican Pacific League

Algodoneros de Guasave backstop Jose Felix was 2-for-4 with his second double of the young winterball campaign. Felix was pinch-run for after he singled in the top of the ninth.

Obregon closer Cody Eppley earned his second save with a quick 1-2-3 ninth inning––inducing three consecutive groundouts––on 16 pitches. Although it's only a five-inning sample size, Eppley is getting 10 groundouts per airout thus far.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Begins November 4.
