The Saguaros did a number on former Rangers draft pick Matt Purke in his first professional start, tagging him for seven runs in just one-third of an inning.
Third baseman Mike Olt was part of the damage, as he doubled off Purke during the explosive first inning. Olt was 1-for-3 with a two-bagger and a sacrifice fly, giving him four RBI for the day and 16 on the season.
Eight-hole hitting right fielder Ryan Strausborger was 2-for-4 with a two-bagger, three runs batted in, and his second stolen base. The speedy outfielder was also caught stealing once.
Justin Miller worked 1.1 innings of scoreless ball out of the bullpen, giving up one hit. The former Fresno State hurler threw 12 of his 18 pitches for strikes, featuring a 91-95 mph fastball to go along with a slider and a changeup.
Sidearming righty Johan Yan worked around a hit and a walk in a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out one.
The U.S. run-ruled Panama––11-0 in seven innings––while improving to 2-0 in the Pan American Games. Third baseman Tom Mendonca came up big again, going 1-for-3 with his first home run of the tournament. He was also hit by a pitch.
First baseman Chad Tracy went hitless in three official at-bats.
No Rangers appeared in Venezuela on Friday.
Shortstop Renny Osuna, who is set to become a six-year minor league free agent after the World Series concludes, batted third and went 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly for the La Guaira club.
Escogido centerfielder Julio Borbon, who is returning from season-ending ankle surgery, appeared in his first winterball game on Friday. The speedster flashed some power by going 2-for-3 with a triple and a home run. He also laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Catcher Jose Felix went hitless in four at-bats, dropping his average to .143 on the young season.
