Johan Yan earned his first Fall League victory after tossing a scoreless eighth inning on Thursday, and the Saguaros' offense broke the tie with two runs in the top of the ninth. Featuring an 86-88 mph sinker, Yan worked a perfect eighth while getting three flyouts and throwing 13 pitches.
Ryan Kelly gave up the lead earlier in the contest by yielding a solo home run to Rockies prospect Nolan Arenado. Overall, the former Pirates farmhand allowed a run on two hits in 1.1 innings, fanning two.
Through 7.2 innings, Kelly has yielded six runs on seven hits (including three homers), walking five and striking out four.
Third baseman Mike Olt had one single and two strikeouts in four at-bats, dropping his batting average to .288 in 14 games.
The United States finished with a co-bronze medal in the Baseball World Cup and later took home silver at the Pan American Games. In the two tournaments combined, third baseman Tom Mendonca went 16-for-59 (.271) with four doubles, four homers, and 17 RBI in 16 games. He drew two walks and struck out 22 times. First baseman Chad Tracy was 5-for-38 (.132) with a double and four runs batted in.
Aguilas del Zuila starting pitcher Wilfredo Boscan threw five innings of one-run ball but didn't factor in the decision. The 21-year-old righty gave up four hits (including a solo homer) while walking one and striking out one. He threw 53 of his 76 pitches for strikes.
Boscan has the following line through four appearances and three starts––14.1 ip, 13 h, 5 r, 6 bb, 8 k.
The La Guaira/Magallanes game was postponed.
