16-6, 6.0 GU
As usual, the Fall League was off on Sunday. The Surprise Saguaros will face Scottsdale on Monday afternoon.
Tanner Scheppers has struggled––particularly with his control––during the last two weeks in the Venezuelan Winter League. But the fireballing righty helped right the ship in a big game on Sunday. Pitching in the Magallanes/Caracas rivalry and in front of 16,475 fans, Scheppers worked a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts. He threw 12 of his 18 pitches for strikes.
Joe Ortiz (1.80 ERA/.158 BAA) suffered the loss for La Guaira on Saturday, but he came back on Sunday and worked one-third of an inning without allowing a run. He faced two hitters, getting a groundout and giving up a single.
Licey's Engel Beltre entered as a ninth-inning defensive substitution in center field, but he didn't get a plate appearance.
Julio Borbon, who played in right field for Escogido on Sunday, was hitless in three at-bats before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the eighth. Borbon has already recorded a start at all three outfield positions.
After hitting well in his first two games, Borbon is 0-for-13 over his last four contests.
Right-hander Carlos Pimentel worked 1.2 scoreless innings out of the Leones' bullpen. He worked around a hit and two walks (one intentional) while striking out two.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Pimentel has the following line through six outings––9 ip, 1 h, 1 r, 4 bb, 9 k.
Pitching on consecutive days for the third time this winterball season, righty reliever Cody Eppley allowed a run on two hits in one inning. He also struck out one while throwing 17 pitches.
Guasave backstop Jose Felix entered the game in the second inning and went 0-for-2, giving him only five hits in his first 34 at-bats (.147) this season.
There were no games on Sunday.
Begins November 4.
